Křečík Roborowského se v posledních letech stal jak miláčkem mnoha domácností, tak i častým chovancem v teráriích polopouštních biotopů, a o jeho zdárný odchov se snaží řada chovatelů hlodavců. Není to způsobeno pouze milým, neagresivním chováním – byť velmi plachým, ale také vyšší cennou, za kterou jsou vykupováni a dále distribuováni. Poptávka je vyšší než nabídka – o tom není pochyb, ale relativně vysoké nároky těchto drobných hlodavců jsou častou příčinou neúspěchu velkochovů, a tak většina odchovů pochází od drobných chovatelů.
I přes skutečnost, že křečík Roborowského k nám byl poprvé importován počátkem 70. let, nikdy nedošlo k tak masivnímu rozšíření jako v případě křečíka džungarského ( Phodopus sungorus), jehož cena v období odchovu mláďat klesá na cenu krmných hlodavců ( tzn. téměř v průběhu celého roku). Oproti tomu je křečík Roborowského velmi sezóní druh, a pohlavně dospívá také relatinvě dlouho ( asi tak po půl roce).
I přes svou již zmíněnou plachost, láká svým okouzlujícím vzhledem. Má popelavě šedou podsadu a okrově růžové, dlouhé pesíky. Břicho i celá spodní část těla je bílá. Vousky směřují hodně kupředu a dávají tak charakteristický tvar čumáčku. Zvláštností jsou ochlupená chodidla. Barevné mutace nejsou známy.
V přírodě žije v oblastech Mongolska, severní Číny apod. Obývá hlavně pouště a polopouště. Aktivní je po celý rok. S kontinentálním podnebím a s tímto spojeným teplotním rozdílem během dne a noci se zvířata vyrovnávají spánkem. Za potravou se vypravuje v podvečer a brzy ráno. Hrabají si asi 1 m hluboké nory, a často sídlí i v převisech pohyblivých dun.
Křečík Roborowského není příliš snášenlivý, ale vůči jedincům stejného druhu není nikdy tak agresinví jako jeho příbuzný – křečík džungarský. V zajetí je lépe chovat jej v párech, nebo v menších skupinách ( 1;2). Co se prostoru týče, pro pár postačí terárium 25x25 cm a více. Jako podestýlku můžeme použít jak písek, tak i obyčejné, ne příliš prašné hobliny. Podobně jako v přírodě mají tendenci vystýlat si pelech srstí, která často ulpívá i na skle. Přestože v přírodě obratně loví drobný hmyz, v zajetí se často leká a dává tedy přednost kočičím granulím, kousku vajíčka apod. Jinak krmíme směsí drobnějších zrnin a olejnatých semen, přidáváme čočku, rýži … Kousky ovoce a zeleniny, v létě listy smetanky a vojtěšky. Lepší je napájet.
Sexuální dimorfismus není u mladých zvířat nijak patrný. V pohlavní dospělosti zkušenému chovateli neunikne drobnost samic oproti samcům. Rozlišování pohlaví u mladých jedinců je také věc velice nesnadná.
Podle literatury může mít samice mláďata až v 10-ti vrzích za sebou, ale v mém chovu nebylo výjimkou i 15 nebo 20 vrhů ( mortalita mláďat se však – k nelibosti chovatele – se stářím samic neúměrně zvyšuje a poslední z těchto vrhů bývá zpravidla bez odchovaných mláďat). Březost trvá asi kolem 20 dní, počty mláďat jsou od 3 do 5 ( rekordní počet v jednom vrhu byl 9 mláďat). Rodí se přirozeně holá a slepá, samostatného života jsou však schopna už od 3 týdnů. Dožívají se relativně vysokého věku na tak drobného hlodavce – často i 3 let.
